Interviews

This week in M Comm we did mock interviews. Personally, I was grateful for the practice in a non-threatening situation.

Because the truth is, I've never gone through a job interview. I've made it to this point in my life with the only experience being nannying. And I wouldn't change that experience for anything - I loved working with the kids and I learned a lot doing so. But my limited experience makes me a little nervous to apply and interview for a "real" job. I was grateful for the tips and methods I learned from the mock interview. I tend to be shy and as a result, building up my resume and what I can do and who I am isn't a strong suit of mine. But doing the mock interview helped me see the difference between showing your best self and being prideful. I can be proud of my accomplishments, and honesty about them will help me and help the interviewer make the best decision for their company.

That's one reason I like M Comm. It contains subjects and material that have real life application. And I feel much more confident about future interviews.

  1. I felt the same way after our interviews in class. I had an interview this week and it really helped prepare me for it. I really was able to apply what I learned in my interview. Although I didn't get to ask the interviewers what the really thought, I could sense a more positive response than I have sensed in the past.

  2. I completely agree. Everything was very helpful, especially for those who really prepared themselves in getting the job description right, and tweaking thier resumes and cover letters to fit that job description.

I also enjoy M COM for that reason. We get a lot more homework than sometimes I feel we should, considering it is a 300 level class and a general credit, but it has the highest percent applicable material of any of the classes I am currently taking. It's not always my first priority but I have used most of the things we've learned in class outside of class this semester as well.

  4. I don't know how you've managed to not go through an interview yet, but I'm impressed. My wife, despite being an active member of the church her whole life, didn't give a talk in church until after we were married. It's like making your first contact on your mission or teaching your first lesson. The more you do it, the easier it gets.
